Before James Mtume blessed us with some of the boldest 80s Funk out there

he called upon the spirits of Jazz - joined by strong forces (see front cover!!)

This being the hardest to find in his oeuvre makes it the white whale for many.

James Mtume was a seminal figure in the 1970’s New York free jazz scene -

among the wildest of its fiery voices. Part of a remarkable musical legacy -

his father and uncles made up the Heath Brothers, he began his career working

with Don Cherry, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, and Freddie Hubbard,

before releasing his first LP as a band leader on the legendary imprint Strata East in 1972.

Across the coming decade, he collaborated steadily with Pharoah Sanders, Sonny Rollins,

McCoy Tyner,and a string of others, as well as becoming Miles Davis’s percussionist.

Incredibly prolific and in demand,it wasn’t until 1977 that his second album aka Rebirth Cycle came.

Featuring a stunning ensemble, it encounters Mtume at his best, offering an equally tense series of improvisations, imbued with a slower pace and sophistication.

Shifting between the depth of spiritual jazz, the raw energy, intellect, and emotion of free jazz,

and threaded with soulful vocals, Rebirth Cycle is among the great works of 1970’s black American music. Tinged with the road less traveled - privately issued only months before being signed to Epic as an R&B act, this is the last encounter with one of Jazz’s great talents before he left that world.

Swiss master drummer Peter Giger's (ex Dzyan) started the family as a solo project in 1975. From this point on the Family of Percussion grew and released masterpieces featuring Wolfgang Dauner, Albert Mangelsdorff, Alan Skidmore and others. This 1981 album with the self confident title features Giger as the center joined by fellow percussionists such as Trilok Gurtu, Doug Hammond and Tom Nicholas - PLUS master Archie Shepp as a guest at the family table. Most consider this album the family's masterpiece - showcasing ethno-avant-jazz that fuses high-purity percussion sounds and grooves throughout. The title track which is also the opener to the album sucks you right in with that hypnotic mid-tempo groove - reminiscent of the streets of New York. From here it's off to the jungle where you'll be treated with spiritual blessings via multiple percussion instruments as well as Shepp's poetry.

"I liked mixing at the limit of pain. It was really loud. We mixed it quadraphonically in a relatively small room. Sun Ra was fast asleep and snoring loudly. For some reason, I stopped the tape mid-melody. He woke up, swiveled his head like an owl—walking around the room, checking everything. Then he said,

'You Earthling sleep too much.' He lowered his head and started snoring again."

The Center Of The World was formed by Frank Wright and features the reverend himself on single reed instrument, Alan Silva on bass and cello, Muhammad Ali (Raymond Patterson) on drums and Bobby Few on Piano. They're all singing as well. It was described as a "high-energy apex, with Bobby Few's delicately tumbling piano transporting Wright's bluesy wailing to regions of non-stop organic flux, where the music scales peak after peak.

After recording these absolutely incredible albums for MPS with absolutely no financial pressure the big companies got hold of Duke's immense talent again. It resulted in recording more accessible records that did eventually entered the mainstream charts. Nevertheless there are still heavenly pearls to be found here. I'd like to pint out the brasil fusion bits - something that we find a lot in his oeuvre since recording Inner Source in 1973. A love that was refined through his work with Airto and Flora.
