At the top of this month’s new arrivals you’ll find Chico wandering. He’s up here because I am obsessed with this cracking jazz-funk album. Followers of the bin’s selling activity might have encountered me praising the man. On Peregrinations he’s staying in the deep like El Exigente, but adds the funkiness of El Chico. The unbeatable A side is actually one of my favourite sides of 70 Jazz-Funk out there. It starts with a bang (that lovely Luke Vibert found fitting for the intro of Plug’s Feelings) and then we’re off into a spiritual - sometimes psychedelic - trip through the funky jungles of Chico’s mind. Wether you want to make the dancers at your loft party shed tears of joy or enjoy this all killer album over headphones - home alone - you'll be having lots of fun as there's not a single dull moment on the album. El Chico brings his latin percussion set, deepness galore and some humour too. This is his masterpiece imho. Enjoy the ride!

Indeed so hard that it took me almost a year of intense digging to get another one throug one of the guys involved in the making. I recommend to buy every Chico Hamilton record that you can get a hold of. That dude has golden hands. From his psychedelic & latin jazz days in the 60s (check Head Hunters or El Chico) to the 70s Jazz-Funk GEMS - he produced a fat overseas container of fantastic tunes. This relatively late release from 1980 isn't less interesting. Why? Because of it's tenderness. A new side in Chico's oeuvre. There are so many beauties featured on the LP - not easy to pick faves for the soundclip...

I have been dancing to this MASTERPIECE half of my teen age and ever since. Charles Wright took James Brown's joy of improving a step further as he was less of a maniac and a bit more relaxed. You can hear him enjoying what he does every damn second, even when he's getting mad at mom. The whole album is a blast but let me pick out That's All That Matters Baby, please. I heard it first on a trip to Hamburg when I was probably 15. We went down the stairs into the legendary soulkitchen and only minutes after entering the DJ put this on at prime time after a really stomping tune (I don't remember that one). ALL lights were dimmed to the max and everybody in the room felt the magic. Goosebumps! One day I will recreate that moment ;) You wanny try too?

Mac Rebenack, the Meters and Allen Toussaint doing their thing knee deep in the Bayou. Second line beat Funk with the voodoo priest gargling over it with Southern Comfort. Check the cover art in the multi foldout and understand why the dude is called the Nite Tripper :) This is the german copy and it shows a bunch of surface scuffs. It plays with occasional background crackle as well as a bunch of soft pops and is very enjoyable. Not the collector's copy but a great tool for the DJ as Right Place Wrong Time works EVERY TIME (even on people that are not that funky) and there's a bunch of more hits for the funky folks

I stopped wondering about the unusually spiritual and deep vibes in Sky's version of boogie when I found out that Sky is just an offshoot of the Pharaos consisting of musician still playing with Philip Cohran & the Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Back to this album. It's a good bit more soulful and funky than the Pharaohs' releases and was released in Europe only. As far as I know there's a german and a french pressing of it. Here's a lovely copy of the german version.
